Anthropology & Aging (ISSN 2374-2267), the only peer-reviewed journal focusing on the anthropology and aging and the life course, plays a vital role as a resource for sharing theoretical, methodological, and empirical breakthroughs in our field. [https://anthro-age.pitt.edu/] All issues are free and open-access, published twice a year by the University Library Systems (ULS) with the support of the University of Pittsburgh. The journal began in 1979 as Anthropology and Aging Quarterly and first acquired an ISSN in 2006. The mission of Anthropology & Aging is to bring together the work of scholars, students, and applied anthropologists from around the world in a variety of disciplines to address fundamental issues of aging and the human experience. The journal is the official publication of the Association for Anthropology, Gerontology, and the Life Course (AAGE).
To fulfill its mission, Anthropology & Aging depends upon the support of AAGE and the efforts of a dedicated volunteer staff of editors. The larger the staff, the easier it is for everyone to review, manage, edit, and produce quality issues. We are currently seeking a co-editor to work with our current editor, Cortney Hughes Rinker (George Mason University), to share in some of these tasks and to help guide the vision of the journal’s future.
The preferred qualifications for co-editor are:
· Academic and/or professional interests related to aging and the life course
· Prior experience with a digital journal or online publication platform
· Previous editorial experience, such as serving on an editorial board or working in a journal office
· The ability to work to deadlines and self-manage time
· Ability collaborate with the other editors and staff at the journal
The successful candidate is expected to be a member of AAGE on accepting the position. The co-editor position is not open to current students, but early career scholars are encouraged to apply.
There are several professional benefits of working on the journal, such as ample opportunities to network with scholars and students around the world, building leadership experience, participating in professional meetings and conferences, gaining a better understanding of the publication process, and becoming more familiar with the wide range of new research in aging and anthropology. It is an exciting time in the journal’s history. We are working with ULS to link to scholarly indexing/abstracting services—we recently became included in SCOPUS—and to gain recognition as a serious scholarly journal that can attract high-quality work. We continue to remain independent and dedicated to disseminating research freely and respecting our contributors’ rights to their work. In light of recent events surrounding exploitative practices in open access publishing and more broadly, academic precarity, the journal is dedicated to making sure that all editorial staff (who are all volunteer including this position) are well supported and respected.
If you are interested or have questions about the co-editor position, please contact us at journal@jeans13.sg-host.com. To be considered for the position, please email a letter of interest outlining your qualifications and a CV. We highly encourage AAGE members to consider this position as a way of participating in the mission of our association.
All applications received on or before August 15, 2019 will be given full consideration. The position is expected to begin on or around December 1, 2019 and will be a 2-year term with a possibility of renewal. https://anthro-age.pitt.edu/
